Under tile heating

Under tile heating - 3 methods commonly used.......

Note: this page deals specifically to methods that are applied over the surface of a floor. Refer also to the page on concrete floor heating for in-slab heating, which is used beneath all floor coverings.

Sand-cement bedded floors

Warming a bathroom floor

This is a common method for warming floors in wet areas, since these usually have a layer of sand/cement mix spread over the wet-sealed floor, which varies in thickness (eg. 30 - 50-mm) to provide fall to the floor waste for drainage.

Thin bed mat systems

Heatec can utilise a thin cable pre-attached to a very open mat background, allowing the adhesive to be spread through and over the mat.

As with the normal bedded floors, the location of any fixtures not already present are identified. The mat is supplied on 500mm wide rolls in a range of factory-made lengths. Installers can cut and turn the matting, and remove some cable  from the backing as necessary, to work around odd shapes.

Although some tilers are quite happy to lay directly over this, we recommend a thin bedding to protect the cable and provide a better working surface.

Rather than having cable supplied pre-attached to mat, the thin cable can be supplied on rolls of various sizes, pre-terminated with cold tails. The spacing is marked out on the floor and the cable is unrolled and adhered to the floor. We always recommend a thin (eg. 3mm) self-levelling mix to protect the cable and provide a flat surface for the tilers

Which system for me?

If your floor is to be bedded with a sand cement mix, then the bedded floor system using heavier duty cables at around 125mm spacing is recommended. Bedded floors are common in bathrooms, allowing the tiler to carefully grade the bedding to a floor waste. Rough and uneven floors in other areas are also often bedded to provide a better surface for tiling.

For thin bed systems, the free form cable supplied on reels is well suited to small areas, particularly those of irregular shape. Either method can be used in larger rooms, but the mat is then marginally quicker to lay.

For any of the methods, kits can be made up to suit, with full instructions provided. All of these systems involve permanent hidden connection to the electricity supply and thermostat, so you will need to involve your electrician.
