Drying equipment

The drying process

This is facilitated by heat, good air velocity over the product, low humidity and minimising the product thickness. The time taken for a batch can vary from a few hours for some herbs, to around 20 hours for many fruits and a week or more for macadamia nuts.

Drying equipment

Heatec manufacture drying equipment in a variety of configurations and sizes, however the majority  have been heat pump batch dryers. Alternative fuels may be electric element, or gas, or diesel.

In heat and vent systems, heat exchangers are used to recover heat from the moist air being vented.

Heat pump dryers

Although Heatec can construct dryers using a variety of fuels, we are finding that heat pump dehumidifier drying holds the most promise and we have invested time into the development of efficient moisture extraction processes from the air stream and computerised control systems. With the emphasis directed to lowering the humidity rather than higher temperatures to promote drying. In this way, more of the volatile substances that are responsible for flavour are retained, resulting in a quality product with improved flavour.

Drying & freezing trays

The food grade Heatec drying trays are stackable and can be used for a variety of food handling applications.

The trays are 600mm x 480mm. They can handle products up to 35mm thick and are ideally suited to either freezing or drying applications.

They are of very open design to allow for unrestricted airflow and good air contact with the product. Ribbing provides for support, allowing for loads of 2 kg per tray without undue deflection.

Being stackable, they are commonly loaded in groups of four, with 192mm being allowed between the supporting trolley rails.

The trays can be made from 2 food grade materials:

1.  High density polyethylene (HDPE) A very tough and serviceable material suitable for either freezing applications or drying up to 55 C.

2.  Polypropylene with a stiffening filler additive. These may be better suited to higher temperature applications, up to 80 C.
